Revelation 20:1–6 (ESV)
The Thousand Years
20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.
4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

John sees an angel coming down from heaven.  Some say this angel is Jesus, some say it is an angel working under the authority of Jesus Christ.  I tend to go with the later, but there are times that Jesus has been referred to as an angel.  Nevertheless, the angel seized the dragon and bound him for a thousand years.  Was there ever a fight?  I remember watching an MMA fight where a fighter had been trash talking against the champion.  As they prepared for the fight, the trash talker continued until the bell rang.  When the bell rang, the champion came out and hit the trash talker one time and he was knocked out.  Fight was over... as fast as it began.  The only difference is that in this fight... the trash talker did have a chance of defeating the champion, but in this spiritual battle, Satan couldn’t win.  Christ had already won the fight on the cross.  Satan is bound for a thousand years.  Too much is made of this number.  It is a symbolic number of 10 cubed, 10 being the number of completeness.  This time began at the cross and represents the New Testament church.  Satan is released and the Church must endure times of tribulation and testing.  I ask the question, is Satan at work in today’s world?  Yes he is!  We are living in that time period as we speak.
Then in the vision, John sees those with authority to judge the unbelievers and Christians are part of those with authority.  This is stated in the New Testament (Matt. 19:28; 1 Cor 6:2).  The First resurrection and the second death often brings a lot of questions.  The first resurrection is when a nonbeliever comes into the saving faith and is regenerated by the Holy Spirit and the means of grace... this is when a person is converted to a Christian.  The second death is when we die.  The first death came at our conversion when we became a new creation.  Our old self dies and God makes us into a new creation.  So as a believer, we have already died (at baptism) and will die again when our soul goes to heaven.  We are living in this time period, waiting on Jesus Second Coming or our second death, which ever comes first.  I pray: Lord protect me from the assaults of Satan and keep me faithful unto my second death.  I look forward to seeing you face to face.  You have washed me clean and I will forever thank you for your work in me.  Amen.
