Revelation 18:4–8 (ESV)
The Fall of Babylon
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,
“Come out of her, my people,
lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues;
5 for her sins are heaped high as heaven,
and God has remembered
6 Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,
and repay her double for her deeds;
mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.
7 As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
‘I sit as a queen,
I am no widow,
and mourning I shall never see.’
8 For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,
death and mourning and famine,
she will be burned up with fire;
for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”
I loved watching the movie Rocky; I’ve seen them all.
My favorite still has to be the original Rocky. Rocky is fighting Apollo Creed, who is a popular and flashy Champion. Everyone likes a Champion. Rocky is a dead beat loser, who nobody thinks has a shot at this fight, except his trainer.
The one thing going for Rocky is he is can take a punch. Due to a fighter cancelation, Rocky is given a chance of a lifetime and is scheduled to fight Apollo Creed. Well Apollo beats the living daylight out of Rocky, but Rocky won’t stay
down. Rocky, bloody and beat, rallies back. What is interesting is the crowd was yelling for Apollo Creed, but as the fight lingers on, the crowd witnesses the fighting heart of Rocky and they start yelling for Rocky. If you haven’t
seen this classic fight movie, I’m not going to spoil it. But today’s reading kind of plays out to this movie. The false church has lured a lot of believers away from the true church into the false church which is based on works righteousness.
This is not hard to do. Out of the fallen church (fallen Babylon), the voice is calling those who have been lured away or misled, to return and the people are turning against the fallen church. Throughout the Bible, we often see people changing
sides. As I write this article, it is Holy Week. Yesterday was Palm Sunday/Jesus Triumphal Entry. The crowds welcomed him as a King when he entered Jerusalem with palms, red carpet (not red, bed they laid their cloaks on the ground), and
singing praise. By Friday, the same people will be yelling to crucify him and will mock him as He dies on the cross. Have you said you will never turn from Christ? I ask you have you ever sinned? Every time you sin, you turn your back
on Jesus and do it your way. We are no better! Yet God calls us back and the church grew after His death and resurrection. I pray: Lord, again I ask that you help me to keep my eyes focused on you. I repent of my sins
and pray for your grace and mercy. Renew me and guide me according to your ways. Amen.
